Practical Report: Grounded Theory Approach to Analysing Interview Data on Students Beliefs About Alcohol Use

This study aimed to develop an understanding of students views regarding alcohol use and the environment.  Past statistics indicate that alcohol use is threatening students.  This research intended to develop a deeper understanding of the topic via more qualitative methods.  The data were collated by transcribing 3 interviews (each with 2 participants) and analysing the overall corpus through categorising.  A grounded theory emerged, its main findings being that the environment carries numerous influential pressures, but the morality of the individual student can act as an opposing force.  This study concluded by realising the apparent need for further investigation and to take action against promotion, including educating students of the dangers and of their own potentials that lie outside of drinking….(short extract)
