For the second research essay assignment, students have the opportunity to choose any topic related to mass media and culture that is of interest to them. Students may choose, for example, to research a particular personality, controversy, or theme. Possible topics may include examinations of particular genres, such as sitcoms, punk rock, romance novels, reality TV, sports media, or news programming. Additional topics may be more specific such as looking in-depth at particular ideas like race, ethnicity, sexuality, gender, violence, etc. in various media. The main requirement in choosing a topic is that students pick something that is of interest to them and that they will be able to fully research and investigate. People are more inclined to write thoughtful, well-reasoned essays when they can work on a topic that is close to their interests.
Students are strongly encouraged to make use of the Browne Popular Culture Library on our campus. Internet-based resources such as Wikipedia, simple Google searches, IMDB, etc. are highly discouraged. You will need to consult primary and secondary textual resources as the foundation for your research. Each essay must include a strong thesis statement defining your essay’s objective, theme, and what you intend to prove. Whatever your topic, be sure to consult what critics and scholars on the subject have had to say in their own commentary. Be sure to cite your research within the body of the essay. Your essay will be much stronger if you can support your claims, views, and opinions upon previous scholarship. Each student must post their topic choice on our class discussion board so it can be approved by the Instructor. Students who wish to turn in a completed rough draft prior to the due date may do so if they wish for the Instructor to review it and offer constructive criticism.

Essay Requirements:
• The essay should be 7-8 full pages in length (typed double spaced)
• The essay should include a works cited page
• A minimum of four scholarly/academic sources are required
