What is it?
When we talk about pastoral care and support, what do we really mean? Mann (2006, cited in De Jong, 2007: 5) poetically defined pastoral care as, the oil of learning not the destination but the nourishment for the journey. However, how is it explained in terms of what we should see evident in education settings today? Calvert (2009:267) explains that pastoral care refers to the structures, practices and approaches used to support the welfare, well-being and development of children and young people.
What does it look like?
Effective Pastoral Care will positively impact on the learning and wellbeing of all pupils if it is integrated into all activities and is intrinsic to the life of the school. It should be evident throughout.
