Introduction
Ethical practice in counselling refers to the way this profession is regulated through a set of ethical guidelines and frameworks. The importance of these codes of practice is recognised by counsellors in order to ensure the clients best interest. This essay examines the definition of ethical counselling and attempts to explore important issues, such as confidentiality, setting boundaries, securing emotional and mental safety and other key principles in the counselling process. The essay also explores how these important principles and other personal qualities and competencies of an effective counsellor can help to enhance the clients ability to achieve self-acknowledgement. Some of the non-ethical behaviours in counselling are also discussed and the conclusion summarises the important concepts and issues of ethical practice in counselling.
