Madonna is a pop diva. This reputation was built by her musical performances where she was renowned as ‘the biggest female pop star of the 1980s and the early 1990s’. Madonna also received a lot of attention from the media and from academics and received more Number Ones than any other pop star. Madonna can be particularly described as a diva due to her singing voice. Madonna’s vocal ability however has been described as ‘the weakest aspect of her performance’.

When listening to ‘Material Girl’ by Madonna, the music is very upbeat and catchy. The lyrics of the song also represents the power and control that Madonna has as a diva. For example: ‘Some boys kiss me, some boys hug me, I think they’re okay. If they don’t give me proper credit, I just walk away.’ This supports the reputations of Madonna as a diva as she has the power of choice and freedom.
