Part 1 – Carefully read the following extract several times. Compare and contrast the ways in which the passage below attempts to discredit Antony with the ways this is done in the speech attributed to Octavian by Cassius Dio (in Reading 1.1 of Book 1, Chapter 1).

In this assignment I will be investigating how Octavian attempted to discredit Antony in two different texts but with the same purpose (script by Cassius Dio and the script by Plutarch). The scripts were speeches given by Octavian and looking at the similarities and differences I will explore how Octavian is attempting to turn the Roman Empire against Antony.

As per Cassius Dio Antony has abandoned his whole ancestral way of life (Cassius Dio, in Reputations, 2008, p. 27) this would be a major insult to Antony and would instantly sway the minds of the audience against Antony. Plutarch uses this technique as well when he refers to Antonys burial wishes from his will his body should be carried in state through the Forum and sent to Cleopatra (Plutarch, in AA100 Assignment Booklet, 2013, pg. 19).
