Some theorists believe that it is gender that produces sex and not vice versa. Judith Butler went as far as to say that sex is a fiction (Rogers, 2003, p. 203). Peoples understanding of what sex is, is the result of human creativity and inventiveness (Rogers, 2003, p. 203) and that a humans understanding of what it means to be a male or a female are then defined as that gender.
