Schultz (1978) explains how in the scientific era when the worker was considered to be just another machine, there was no interest in job satisfaction  after all, a machine does not have attitudes whatsoever (Schultz, 1978, p.272).  However, the human relations focus considerably changed this view and it became evident that workers productivity was not only a function of their skills and abilities, but also of their attitudes.  This was followed by efforts to measure attitudes and to train supervisors to be sensitive to employees attitudes.  Indeed, the assessment of employee attitudes towards their job has become a widespread activity in organisations in which management is concerned with both the physical and psychological well-being of people….(short extract)
