Male pride as a dominant force throughout the play Romeo and Juliet

In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare presents male pride as a dominant force. He does this through a few characters but mainly Lord Capulet and Tybalt. I think the way male pride is defined in this play is that the men feel that they have to behave in a certain way, demanding respect, without earning it, just because they are male, and not being seen as weak. Male pride is shown as a dominant force throughout the play, as when the play was written, male pride was normal. People in the sixteenth century, thought that men should behave in this way. Women were regarded as the weaker sex and needed a male to look after them. Shakespeare would have written this into his plays subconsciously reflecting on society.

Throughout the story, the Capulets and the Montagues are caught up in a constant feud. This fight has been kept alive by male pride. Their pride has stopped them from backing do…(short extract)
