(i) Synchronous motor operates only at one speed, known as synchronous speed. This speed is independent of load and can be varied either by varying the supply frequency or by changing the number of poles.
(ii) It has got no self starting torque and, therefore, before connecting it to ac supply it is to be run up to the synchronous speed by some external means.
(iii) It can operate under a wide range of power factor both leading and lagging. Power factor can be varied by varying the excitation.
