Literature Review: Young peoples involvement in sport participation.

Childrens participation in sport is a cause for concern among many health researchers and educationalists (Allied Dunbar, 1992; NCSS, 1994; HEA, 1997; Armstrong & Welsman, 1997; Penny & Harris, 1997).  Empirical evidence has shown that children in the secondary school age range are not participating in enough physical activity to attain potential health benefits (HEA, 1997). Research has shown an association between low activity in children and poor long- term health. Sedentary lifestyles that have evolved in childhood can cause diseases such as CHD, osteoporosis and some kinds of cancer (Sallis, et al, 1992).
