Assignment Task:
‘It is not only what films tell us about society which is important but also what an understanding of the society can tell us about the films and the nature of their representations’ (Hill, 1986). Discuss with reference to TWO related British films.

Assignment Notes:
1. The basic task here is to consider a pair of films in relation to the institutional, historical, socio-cultural and/or intertextual contexts in which theyoccurred.

2. Films should not be related simply through their authorship (i.e., don’t just choose two films by the same director).
3. You should not choose one or more of the screening films for this task.

4. You are expected to produce an informed interpretation of your chosen films, i.e. an interpretation which takes on board existing accounts in the literature and which provides appropriate insights into the socio-historical and institutional contexts in which the films occurred, but which also contains clear original analysis on your part.

5. Your assignment should be written under the following headings (please use these headings rather than writing the essay freestyle!):

• A brief (200 word max) INTRODUCTION, signposting what you intend to do;
• A brief (200 word max) SYNOPSIS of each of the films;
• A characterisation of the relevant socio-historical and institutional BACKGROUND to your material (including existing accounts in the literature), properly referenced;
• Your own ANALYSIS of your chosen films, concentrating either on a reading of the texts as a whole or on one or more significant scenes, as appropriate;
• A SUMMARY of the way in which your chosen material reflects and/or inflects the socio-historical context in which it occurred;
• BIBLIOGRAPHY, using the Harvard System of Referencing.
