For some children this developmental process is interrupted as a result of abuse (sexual, emotional or physical) and/or neglect, researchers have found that this can have a devastating effect on a childs intellectual, physical, social and psychological development (Crittenden and Ainsworth, 1989 – cited by Gaudin, 1995).
