Is a rights-based approach, especially one which promotes child participation the best way of improving childrens lives?

This essay will discuss some of the main approaches to intervening in childrens lives; it will focus particularly on the rights-based approach. It will begin by discussing what is meant by a rights based approach and more specifically at participation rights of the child in society today. It will view two areas of childrens legislation,  The Declaration of Geneva (1924) and more recently The UNCRC, The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) and what they focused on in particular. It will attempt to evaluate the argument that rights based approach works better at improving childrens lives and also analyse how it compares against other main approaches. Childrens rights are not with out its opposition and I will discuss the issue raised that giving children so much participation entitlement is detrimental to their health and well being.
