Horace Kallen’s “Democracy vs. the Melting Pot,” and Randolph Bourne’s “Trans-national America”

Horace Kallen’s “Democracy vs. the Melting Pot,” and Randolph Bourne’s “Trans-national America”
A comparative analysis: Offer an analysis that compares and contrasts these texts, discussing points of connection and overlap between the two, and explicating the ways in which they differ. In particular, I’d like you to cover three particular points of comparison:

Arguments against assimilation and nationalism: Both thinkers target and critique these ideas (tied together in the metaphor of the “melting pot”), which were finding some support in America at the time. What are the arguments that each thinker makes, and what similarities and/or differences can you find between them? (NOTE: Just because these authors might share a common stance on this issue doesn’t mean the arguments they give in support of it are the same!) ** include 3 quotes to support analysis
Theories of cultural/national/ethnic identity: In making their arguments, both thinkers present their own theories of identity (whether in terms of nation, culture, race, etc). How do these theories compare? Where do they overlap and where do they differ? *** provide 3 quotes.

Visions of a pluralist America: Each thinker pictures a (perhaps idealized) pluralist, multicultural America of the future, but these visions may not be entirely the same. How do they compare (and how do they reflect the commonalities and differences you picked out in the two points above)? *** provide quotes and explain

An evaluation: After completing your comparative analysis, discuss the relative merits of these two theories, considering the various advantages and/or problems you see with each view. If you find one theory more persuasive or compelling than the other, give your reasons why. If you find both problematic for various reasons, offer an argument defending that position. As always, support your evaluative position with your own careful, clear reasoning.

Again, please include clear introduction and conclusion paragraphs, the former including a thesis statement that sums up your comparative analysis and evaluation of the two texts.

CITATION: When citing any directly quoted, paraphrased, or otherwise referenced material from the text, please include a parenthetical reference including the author’s name and a page number. For example: He uses the metaphor of an orchestra to illustrate a diverse America (Kallen, 92). You should not have to consult or cite any other sources for this paper (in fact, you should focus only on the texts at hand, without the benefit of outside sources).
