History – UCAS Personal Statement

The most chilling moment in Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis involves the combination of military fanfares and drum rolls, with the words Miserere nobis. The juxtaposition of this, representing disillusionment with one of the worlds most powerful dictators, can only be understood in the context of history.

I have been passionate about history ever since I first read a book set in the past. My voracious reading of history includes many areas outside the A-level syllabus. The American Civil War is a particular enthusiasm. The different motives behind this war are exceptionality intriguing. They are well illustrated in the compilation, Voices of the Civil War’, but especially enlightening is James McPhersons Battle Cry of Freedom’ as it combines a worms eye perspective with a cohesive overview….(short extract)
