Choose and answer ONE (1) of the following questions below. Your paper should be 1200 words in
length (double-spaced, 12-point font, 1-inch margins), and it must incorporate citations from Stephen
Schlesinger’s Bitter Fruit. Remember – this is an analytical paper; do not summarize or re-tell what
Schlesinger says. Instead, focus on providing your own original ideas, drawing on examples from the
book to support your claims. This paper is only for students with last names that begin with A
through L. If you did paper 1, you do not have to do this assignment.
1.) Analyze the conditions and context of the US’s role in the 1954 coup in Guatemala. You may
want to consider (but are not limited to) question such as: On what grounds did the US
intervention in Guatemala take place? How did different actors justify US intervention in
Guatemala? How did Guatemala’s government view the US intervention? What does the
intervention reveal about US foreign policy during the Cold War?
2.) What do the US’s attitudes toward Jacobo Arbenz’s government tell us about US perceptions
of Communism? You may want to consider (but are not limited to) question such as: What
did the US define as “Communism”? What did Guatemala define as “Communism”? How
did these events reflect US attitudes towards Communism in the early Cold War?
3.) “The United States’ actions in Guatemala fit within the broader ideals upon which the United
States is based.” Do you agree or disagree with this statement, and why? Be certain to use
specific examples from Bitter Fruit to support your claims.
As this paper requires no outside reading, you may cite quotations in the following way: “Things
happened” (Schlesinger, 210).
In addition to answering one of the questions above, be aware that style will be taken into consideration
in the evaluation of your papers. You must include an introduction featuring a strong thesis sentence, as
well as a conclusion that summarizes your main arguments and points. Additionally, since a key
component of writing a paper is conveying your ideas clearly and concisely, spelling and grammar will
be taken into consideration in your final grade.
Papers are due on Blackboard by 8:00 AM on Tuesday, April 12. Late papers will lose one letter grade
