In this 5-6 page double-spaced writing assignment, you will be asked to use Nietzsche, Schmitt, Arendt, Fanon or Said to analyze a media representation of a contemporary issue chosen from a short list provided by the professor.(LISTED BELOW) You will be asked to summarize some of the key points made by your chosen author, summarize your chosen issue/representation, describe how your chosen author would understand your chosen issue/representation, and explain briefly your own position in relation to the author’s. You will be graded on your understanding of the author’s arguments, the quality of your argument concerning his or her relationship to the media representation, the quality of your argument concerning your own position, spelling and grammar.
Include your own opinion on the news media object you are discussing. Compare and contrast your opinion with those expressed by the author you have chosen.
Discuss only the texts assigned as readings in the course.
Use direct quotes from the course readings to support your arguments.

Advice:
Do not try to summarize the entire reading, or the entire news object. Instead, focus on a few (ideally 3) specific ideas from the author, and a few (ideally 3) specific ideas or facts from the news media object. Try to limit yourself to introducing the object in one or two sentences.
Look for ideas that relate in a complex or contradictory way to the object you have chosen. For example, it may be reasonable to argue that your author would take two different viewpoints on the object that don’t necessarily line up. Point this out!
Remember to include and argue for your own opinion. Look for ideas on which you both agree and disagree with the author you are discussing.
Keep your introduction short and to the point.
Organize each paragraph around a single quote from the object you have chosen or from the author you are discussing, which best represents a particular idea.
Place the quote near the beginning of the paragraph, so that you can refer to the author’s specific language.
