Freuds theory of the unconscious is unfalsifiable. Should we therefore dismiss it as mere pseudo-science?

Pseudo-science is defined in The Penguin Dictionary of Psychology as the improper use of scientific method, a fake or false science.  Most pseudo-science has the superficial trappings of real science but is contaminated by such factors as poor control over experimental conditions, improper analysis or data, illogical deductive reasoning and, occasionally, outright fraud.  Popper determines Freuds theory of the unconscious as pseudoscience because it cannot be tested and therefore possibly proved false.  However, it is arguable as to whether, simply because psychoanalysis is not classified as scientific, it should therefore be dismissed.  Nevertheless, many problems emerge when looking at Freuds theory, which uses unconscious longings, thoughts and memories for the basis of his analysis….(short extract)
