Paper instructions:

In Fighting for American Manhood, Kristin Hoganson argues that gender directly affected U.S. foreign policy at the turn of the twentieth century.  IS SHE RIGHT?

This assignment invites you to review Hoganson’s scholarship and wrestle with the nature of American statecraft after the Civil War.  In evaluating your review, I’ll be looking for the basics — a crystal clear thesis, convincing argumentation, and a sense of style — as well as your deeper reflections about Hoganson’s use of evidence and narrative.  Is her gendered interpretation better (or worse!) than explanations that center on economics, politics, race, or religion?
