Research Project – Final Research Paper Instructions
As the final assignment for this course, you will prepare a Final Research Paper. Throughout the course, you have written a Thesis Statement and an Annotated Outline. The Final Research Paper will combine and expand upon those two assignments.

The Final Research Paper must include the following elements:

Title Page;
Abstract;
Body (including an Introduction, Body Paragraphs/Argument Section, and Conclusion); and
Reference Page

All components of the Final Research Paper must be written using current APA formatting and must be on the same criminal justice topic that you selected for your Thesis Statement and Annotated Outline.

The Final Research Paper must develop an argument that is highlighted in the thesis statement and supported with solid academic research and analysis. Each facet of the thesis statement must be addressed and analyzed throughout the paper.

The title page must use proper formatting as set by the APA style guide. The abstract must be between 150–250 words and provide a clear summary of the paper.

The body of the Final Research Paper must be comprised of 4–6 pages of content. The Title Page, Abstract, and Reference Page are not included in the page count. The introduction must include background information on the criminal justice topic, a well-written thesis statement, and a preview of points. The body must thoroughly support the assertions made in the thesis statement with the use of analysis and comprehensively developed subpoints and academic research. Each paragraph must address one issue and directly relate it to the thesis. The body must also be well-organized and use properly formatted headings. Information must clearly relate to the main topic. The conclusion must summarize the main headings of the paper.

The Reference Page must include at least 5 scholarly sources published within the last five years. The sources must be cited both in the body of the paper as well as in the Reference Page. Biblical references do not count toward the citation requirement.

Before submitting your Final Research Paper, review the Research Project – Final Research Paper Grading Rubric to verify that all components of the assignment have been completed. Save your work as a Microsoft Word document and submit it to Blackboard.

I. Child sexual abuse happens quite often around the world, but such abuse is kept quiet because often time’s victims are afraid of their attackers and what they may do to their families. For victims of child sexual abuse the effects can be traumatic and have a lasting effect that will cause them to feel powerless, ashamed and unable to trust others; any person that can cause this type of trauma to a child should be punished by receiving the death penalty so that they cannot harm another child.
II. Why Child sexual abuse is not reported
A.    Many perpetrators do in fact threaten the victims that if he or she tells, that they might kill someone in their family. Sometimes they say that the police will come and break up their family— this is not an unlikely scenario if the child is believed and the parent who is told actually reports the perpetrator. Other victims are told that no one will believe them if they tell what is going on.
B.    Some victims fear that they will suffer negative consequences, such as being blamed for “seducing” the perpetrator or being accused of lying about what happened.
III. Child sexual abuse consequences
A.    For victims, the effects of child sexual abuse can be very devastating. Victims may feel a significant amount of distress and display a wide range of psychological symptoms, both short- and long-term.  They may feel powerless, ashamed, and distrustful of others around them. The abuse may disrupt a victims’ development and increase the likelihood that they will experience other sexual assaults in the near future
1.    In the short-term (which can be up to two years), victims may display regressive behaviors (e.g., thumb-sucking and bed-wetting in younger children), sleep disturbances, eating problems, behavior and/or performance problems at school, and unwillingness to participate in school or social activities.
2.    Longer-term effects may be wide-ranging, to include anxiety-related, self-destructive behaviors such as alcoholism or drug abuse, anxiety attacks, and insomnia.
B.    A child who is the victim of prolonged sexual abuse usually develops low self-esteem, a feeling of worthlessness and an abnormal or distorted view of sex. The child may become withdrawn and mistrustful of adults, and can become very suicidal.
IV. Punishment of child sexual abuse offenders
A.    Regardless of how much time a defendant is given to serve in prison or on community supervision, most states now require some type of sex offender registration. The punishment ranges, registration requirements tend to be different in relation to the severity of the crime. Lower level sexual assault offenders generally can register for short periods, whereas more violent sex offenders are required to register for life.
B.    Penalties for child sexual abuse are different with the specific offenses for which the perpetrator has been convicted. Criminal penalties may include imprisonment, fines, registration as a sex offender, and restrictions on probation and parole. Civil penalties may include liability for damages, injunctions, involuntary commitment, and, for perpetrators related to their victims, loss of custody or parental rights.
