Evolution is continual process of small but gradual changes of biological characteristics within the species. According to theory introduced by Charles Darwin evolution works mainly through two mechanisms: natural selection and sexual selection with its phenomena of adaptation, intrasexual contest and mates choice. This essay will consider how these two processes contributed to contemporary human behaviour.

Natural selection favours those genes that transcript the qualities that allow survival, reproduction and passing on the strongest genes onto the future generations. Natural selection is best understood as survival of the fittest. That means in evolutionary biology an individual that possess the traits best adapted for the particular environment.
