Just war theorists are compared to pacifists that will engage in war (although true pacifists will not engage in war whatever the cost), if and only if, that war is morally justified. In the course of human history there have been many theories of just war, however, the theory espoused by Augustine and the Roman Catholic tradition has dominated the Western tradition. Basically, this theory states that a nation can go to war if the above mentioned criteria are met and that once engaged in war there are moral limits as to what one can do. The basic assumption is that one may go to war only in order to prevent the loss of human life or human rights and that one may not use war as a means of advancing a nations economic goals.
