last short paper will think about J. M. Coetzee?s novel Foe. Among other things Coetzee?s novel takes a different approach to the question of slavery. In Defoe?s novel, Friday willingly becomes Crusoe?s servant/slave. In Coetzee?s retelling of Robinson Crusoe however, we never know whether Friday?s relationship with Crusoe is voluntary or not. We know only that Friday?s ability to tell us this is gone and that he does not choose to leave Crusoe. Remember, that we never know for sure whether Friday?s tongue has been cut out or whether he simply chooses not to speak. What do you think Coetzee has to say about telling the story of slavery? Is it necessary? Who should tell it? (Thesis write in the introduction)
