Getting Started with Calibrated Peer Review™ (CPR) software
• You need a browser and an Internet connection.
• You will need to have a CPR Username and CPR Password to access the CPR program and complete this assignment.
To create a new CPR Username and CPR Password
1) Go to the CPR login page: <https://cpr.molsci.ucla.edu/cpr/cpr/login.asp>
2) Then, click on the link “New users: first time logging in?” (unless you have used CPR in another course and already have a CPR Username and CPR Password to enter into the appropriate boxes).
3) Select “University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign” from the pull-down menu. (NOTE: You should select from the pull-down menu “University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign” and NOT “University of Illinois, Urbana – Champaign”, i.e., no spaces between Urbana-Champaign.) Also, in the box labeled “Enter your student ID:”, enter your 9 digit University of Illinois ID number (not your social security number). Finally, click on the “Next >” button.
4) Now, you need to create a password. You will also need to enter a challenge question and answer. This challenge question will be used if you forget your login information.
5) Upon completion of your account profile, you will be given a unique CPR Username. Make sure that you save your CPR Username and CPR Password. You will need them every time you access CPR.
If you forget your CPR Username and/or CPR Password
1) Go to the CPR login page: <https://cpr.molsci.ucla.edu/cpr/cpr/login.asp>

If you forget the answer to your Challenge Question
IF YOU FORGET THE ANSWER TO YOUR CHALLENGE QUESTION AND
NEED TO GO THROUGH THIS PROCEDURE, IT WILL NOT
EXCUSE YOU FOR MISSING A DEADLINE.
The EALC 130 instructional staff (J Packard, Y Liu) are unable to look up the answer to your challenge question, so your CPR account will need to be reset by the CPR Administrator, after which you will need to create a new login, password, and challenge question and answer. The CPR Administrator resets CPR accounts only during regular business hours (9 am – 5 pm on Monday – Friday). If your CPR account needs to be reset, then you will need to contact your TA, who will inform you by e-mail after your account has been reset. IF YOU FORGET THE ANSWER TO YOUR CHALLENGE QUESTION AND WE NEED TO RESET YOUR CPR ACCOUNT, IT WILL NOT EXCUSE YOU FOR MISSING A DEADLINE.
** NOTE: If you have login problems, then please read FAQ #3 – 5 at the end of this document. **
** Before Starting Your First CPR Assignment, you must
first take the CPR Guided Tour. **
• After entering your CPR username and CPR password, you will be directed to take a 10 minute “tour”, which highlights key information you need to know to use the CPR software and complete the assignment.
• Click on the link “CPR Guided Tour” and then the “Taking an Assignment” link. Read each screen to learn important information about how the CPR assignment operates.

EALC 130 Writing Assignment – Two Parts
A) Part I of the Assignment (400-500 word Essay, worth up to 30 points) may be started at 2:00 pm on Monday, April 11 and is due before 11:59 pm (Illinois Time) on Friday, April 15.
During this part, you will go to the CPR login page <https://cpr.molsci.ucla.edu/cpr/cpr/login.asp>, enter your CPR Username and CPR Password, and then follow the instructions for writing the essay. The most importantinformation—given in the section on the CPR system labeled ‘Guiding Questions’— also is given below:
Write an essay (between 400 and 500 total words) about one or two LINGUISTIC OR CULTURAL EVENTS OR MISUNDERSTANDINGS that have affected your life significantly, or have made a deep impression on you. Most of your essay should describe your personal experiences, thoughts, and emotions associated with your selected event or misunderstanding. Your essay may, but need not, involve the Chinese language.
A portion of the essay should describe WHAT THE PARTICULAR LINGUISTIC OR CULTURAL CHARACTERISTICS ARE that make the event or misunderstanding PARTICULARLY MEMORABLE OR MAKE IT PARTICULARLY SUSCEPTIBLE TO MISUNDERSTANDING. In addition, because the characteristics of the topic you choose should involve “common knowledge” as well as subjective feelings, you do not need to include references. Nevertheless, your entire essay MUST be written by you in your own words. Your essay will be evaluated to determine if it has been plagiarized, so: DO NOT PLAGIARIZE! Also, DO NOT INCLUDE YOUR NAME WITH YOUR ESSAY OR WITH ANY OF YOUR ESSAY REVIEWS (described in Part II of the assignment). The CPR software will keep track of all of your work without your having to put your name on your essay or your essay reviews described in Part II.

Follow these guidelines:
All student essays, INCLUDING YOUR OWN, will be rated using the criteria in the following Guiding Questions provided below. Therefore, YOU SHOULD REVIEW THE GUIDING QUESTIONS and WRITE YOUR OWN ESSAY BASED ON THESE CRITERIA.

Make sure that your essay is between 400-500 words (based on the word count given in the CPR Text Entry page) before submitting it to CPR, or you will lose points.

** Before the essay deadline (11:59 pm, Illinois Time, on Friday, April 15), check the CPR Web site to ensure your essay was received by the CPR system. **

Make sure to save your Written Assignment to your own computer before submitting it to CPR. This will act as a backup if you have a problem during the submission process.
** Formatting from a word processor is NOT preserved when you copy and paste your essay into the CPR text box. (If you don’t use any HTML tags, then your entire essay will appear as one single paragraph). There are two HTML formatting tags that you are required to use, namely:
1. <p> , and
2. <center> </center>
You need <p> to put a blank line before each of your paragraphs, and
<center> </center> to center the title of your essay.
<p> defines a paragraph with a blank line. Therefore,
<p> “Your submitted text.” would place a blank line before “Your submitted text.”, defining it as a paragraph.
The command ‘<center> </center> ’ centers whatever is between the 2 parts of the tag. Therefore,
<center> “Why I Hate Bananas” </center>
would center the title line “Why I Hate Bananas”
In order to be displayed correctly by CPR, your title and paragraphs must be formatted using HTML tags. Your title will be formatted like this:
<center> This Is My Title </center>

After that, you put a <p> before each one of your paragraphs.
Text entry for Part I ends at 11:59 pm (Illinois Time) on Friday, April 15. If you do not complete Part I before 11:59 pm (Illinois Time) on Friday, April 15, you will receive a zero for the entire Writing Assignment, thereby losing 20% of your course grade.
