Language is an essential part of learning.  Every language in the world consists of four basic principles: reading, writing, speaking and listening. From the moment we are born, we are surrounded by the sounds of speech and it is through listening to this speech we are able to develop our own vocabulary and eventually speak for ourselves.  This in turn then helps us to develop our reading and writing.  The diagram below shows how these four aspects of literacy link together:
