Discuss why it is important to support people in having a voice and express their views with confidence. How could care workers facilitate this?

In this assignment I will address why the principle of supporting those who are being cared for, in having a voice and being heard is important and sometimes difficult. I will explore issues raised by Howard Mitchell who has researched Lennox Castle Hospital; its history, and the impact of long-term experiences of institutionalization, using Goffmans four characteristics of a Total Institution. Comparing the lives of ex-residents Margaret Scully and James Lappin, looking at how they lived and worked there.  Did they express their views with confidence and was their voice heard? Staff member Colin Sproul explains what life was like working there. Finally I will look at how assumptions have changed in the 21st century regarding care and support for people with learning disabilities.
