On the Nutritional Therapy Diploma Course you will be required to write essays
based not only on topics which are introduced in lectures, but also those associated
with your own reading and research. This final essay on the Science Access Course
is designed to introduce you to this process. Therefore, you are required to plan
your study and essay by managing your time accordingly.
 This essay covers three systems: digestive, cardiovascular and endocrine.
Please read the following instructions carefully.

Essay title/question:
Summarize the role of the digestive, cardiovascular and endocrine systems in
digesting a chicken sandwich, and supplying energy to the cells of the body.
In order to achieve maximum marks you need to consider how the digestive,
cardiovascular and endocrine systems function together, to supply energy to
the cells of the body. Cover the following in your discussion.
The process of digestion which breaks down the food into molecules which
may be assimilated in the body. What are the key molecules for energy (ATP)
production?
How these molecules are transported around the body (cardiovascular
system).
How these molecules are passed into the cell (endocrine system which
includes hormones which facilitate membrane transport).
How is energy made inside the cell (briefly discuss the process).
Remember to structure your essay (introduction, main body and conclusion)
and address the question.
In context of the essay question, write a description of the role of each
system (do not simply write a description of each system).

The process of writing and submitting the essay will start to prepare you for the
NTDC. For all assessed coursework follow these guidelines:
Put the essay title at the top of your essay
Include your front sheet as page 1 of your work
The essay should be 1500 words (+ or – 10%)
Include a reference list at the end of your work. Start on a new page
State your word count at the end of your essay, at the close of the
conclusion (i.e. not after the reference list)
All written coursework must be word-processed
Print your name and a page number in the footer on every page
Leave 2.5 cm margins each side for marking and corrections
Please use Arial font size 12 and double line spacing
The deadline for submission of the assignment is on your timetable.
The essay grade will be capped at 50% for unapproved late submissions.
This essay counts as 20% of the module mark and is an obligatory
assessment.
