Abstract:
A research review suggests that resolution of the controversy over the role of stages and individual differences in cognitive development requires a framework that conjoins organism and environment by building transactional or collaboration models. Humans appear to move through at least 8 developmental stages between birth and 18 yrs. of age, although children may show different developmental patterns. Any incompatibility between stages and individual differences arises from 2 incompatible viewpoints: the organismic-structural approach and the mechanistic-functional approach. Problems are noted with respect to the attempt to resolve this incompatibility on the basis of a distinction between competence and performance.
