Data Analysis Project 1
Tabulating and Displaying Data
Instructions: Prepare a report using WORD. If you use other word processor, convert your report
to a PDF file then submit it to Sakai Assignment.
• Objectives/requirements
1. To import data into minitab or MyLabsPlus.
2. To summarize data using graphical methods, tables, and summary statistics.
• Data: Occipital frontal (or head) circumference is a measurement of a child’s head around its largest
area. Measurement of the head circumference is an important part of routine well baby care. During
the well baby exam, a change from the expected normal head growth may alert the doctor of a possible
problem.
The OFC data for newborns in a big city were collected and can be download from the following link:
http://bayes.usouthal.edu/~bwang/Data/OFC.csv
Hint: you can download the file to your local drive, then launch Minitab or MyLabsPlus and import the data.
Minitab should be able to import data stored as .csv files directly. In case that the minitab cannot handle the file
format, you can first open the data files using some other software packages (such as Excel) then save the data
as a format that minitab can handle.
• Requirements for Data Analysis and Reporting:
1. Describe the data. In your report, summarize how many variables are there in the data, and
what is the type of each variable (quantitative or qualitative? If quantitative, is it continuous or
discrete?).
2. Draw a bar graph and a pie chart of variable Sex. Include the graphs in your report and interpret
the graphs.
3. Draw a box-plot for variable Weight. Are there outliers? If yes, how will you deal with such
values?
4. Draw a histogram for variable Weight. Include the graph and interpret the graph (modality,
symmetricity, …).
• Report submission
Students can decide whether to complete the project by individuals or as a team. A team can not have
more than five members. Each team just need to submit one report. In the report, please list the names
of the team members and specify the contribution of each member. You can specify what a member
did for the project, or use a percent to reflect his/her contribution. Make sure each member know and
agree to the results in the submitted reports. Do not include members with NO contribution.
