As I have progressed through the three years of nursing study I have made the transition of a student practising at novice level to that of a competent one (Benner, 1984). I now understand the importance of the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and work towards achieving all standards set out in practice. Whilst caring for patients I respect them as individuals and partners in their care and recognise the benefits of this (NMC, 2004).

The NMC (2004) states that as a nurse you must obtain consent before you give any treatment or care. During the last three years my knowledge of the legal implications arising from the issue of consent has expanded and I now recognise the importance of its use.
