In trying to analyse the approaches that can promote anti-discriminatory and anti-oppressive practice, one will start by defining what discriminatory and oppressive practices are in society. Discrimination is defined as the allocation of people into particular social categories with an unequal distribution of rights, resources, opportunities and power (Thompson 2003). He emphasised that discrimination in society leads to oppression. Karl Marx referred to this as the oppression of the proletariat by those who own the means of production.
