FORMAL ARGUMENTATION REPORT
Objective
The objective of this assignment is for you to demonstrate your ability to conduct research and, using that research, construct a well-reasoned, convincing argument. Please note that you may NOT submit a paper that you wrote for the Ethics course for this paper.

Readings
Use the following texts in tandem with the other readings, media, and discussions in this course. It will be very difficult to complete the assigned paper without having done a thorough reading of all assigned texts. They are meant to be complementary.

• Introduction to Chapter 8: Argument, Kent Lewis (Pg. 331) *(understanding the concepts in this introduction is paramount)
• “Evolution as Fact and Theory”, Stephen Jay Gould (Pg. 346)
• Excerpt from Stormy Weather: 101 Solutions to Global Climate Change, Guy Dauncey (Pg. 353)
• “The Global Economic Pyramid Scheme”, KalleLasn (Pg. 379)
• “Girls Will Be Girls”, Patricia Pearson (pg. 388)

The Assignment
For your research report your topic must meet the following criteria and should have been approved:

1. You must choose a topic that is socially, culturally, and/or politically relevant to the ideas contained in this course AND that has had significant media coverage in the last 4 months.
2. You must choose one of the following arguments to make about your topic (this is NOT just a research paper, but an argument paper)
a. Problem/Solution – argue that X is a problem that can be solved by Y and Z
b. Definition – argue that X is the actual definition of Y rather than Z or that Z is not a logical or ethical definition and propose a new one (similar to your first paper)
c. Fact/Truth – argue that X is true or factual despite Y evidence (which would have to be faulty)
d. Cause/Effect – argue that X and Y caused Z or that X and Y are the effects of Z

Remember this course is about critical thinking, so it is your task to demonstrate your ability to do so. You must also avoid fallacies in your arguments (hence why the Introduction to Chapter 8: Argument is essential reading)

Step 5: Submission Criteria
 1500 words, double-spaced, Times New Roman or Arial font, and size 12 font
 APA citations for all in-text use of material that is not your own (including paraphrases and summaries)
 APA Bibliography for all in-text citations
