The first written project is a short topic essay. This essay is a focused

response to a specific topic, concept or idea from the class readings to date.

A useful way to approach a short essay is to formulate a question or

observation and explore the question through specific examples, images,

artworks, citations and quotations. Here is an example:

Is Roni Horne’s project ‘Cabinet Of’(also known as ‘Clowd and Cloun’) a viable

example of what VilemFlusser refers to as true or experimental photography?

Why?

Choose a topic or idea that you are interested in learning about in more

detail. This is not an exercise in opinion, likes or dislikes. Critical

analysis is welcomed but your discussion and comparisons should be formulated

through considered examples and specific references.

For this essay, your ideas will reference the class readings to date. You may

include other sources as long as they have direct relevance to your topic. For

instance, you may find it useful to research other readings for clarification.

Selected images, artists and photographers that you discuss must be

contemporary. The course is ?Photography Now?. Please ensure that you are not

recycling texts from previous courses or essays (i.e. History of Photography).

The short presentations we have seen in class are excellent examples of how to

explore the ideas from the readings through specific examples, theories,

technologies and images. If you have difficulty identifying a topic that you

wish to write about, please contact me.

The essay should include a short bibliography. All quotations and citations

should be acknowledged using footnotes. Please use either MLA or Chicago Style

formatting. Examples of these style formats are available on the web.
