Group Presenation
Final Group Presentation Description and Rubric (25 points total, group grade)
With your group, prepare an oral presentation of around 10 minutes about a specific

speech
community. Your presentation should describe the history and current sociopolitical context
of this group, with particular attention to language ideologies and subsequent

policies that
shape the experiences of this group in a particular nation-state.
Guiding Questions:
1. What is the chosen speech community you are researching and presenting?
2. Where does this speech community exist (and if in more than one country,

which
country context will your group be discussing)?
3. What is the history of this speech community in this country?
a. Does it pre-date nationhood (e.g.: indigenous groups, local minority
languages) or is it a more recent arrival?
b. What has the status of this speech community and its language been over
time? (i.e.: Historically marginalized but gaining rights and recognition,
always marginalized, formerly high status but now receding)
4. What is the current status of this speech community in this country?
a. What are prevalent current attitudes, especially within circles of power,
towards this group and its language?
b. To what extent are the group and its language given access or even promoted
in politics/governance, education, and cultural participation? (Mention
specific policies and programs in place that support or hinder inclusion in
society).
The assignment has two parts. First, the group must submit one annotated bibliography
compiled from research conducted by each member of the group. Each member must
consult at least one scholarly article/chapter and one primary policy document. Each
entry in the annotated bibliography should include the title, author, and publication date of
the work, along with 3-4 sentences about the main ideas and importance of the

text for the
group’s presentation. The annotated bibliography is due in class, November 10.
The second part is the actual oral presentation, which must address the above guiding
questions and adhere to the guidelines in the rubric below.Presentation Rubric
