Discuss the literary device of animal anthropomorphism in one written fairy tale of your choosing, one film of your choosing, and The One and Only Ivan. Compare and contrast these three texts in your essay; your goal is to give your reader an idea of what anthropomorphism does in children’s literature: what function it serves and whether or not it is a useful device in different texts with different themes. In other words, what does anthropomorphism do in children’s literature, and why?

In order to answer these central questions, you must identify each text’s theme by examining relevant points on the narrative arc, the main conflict(s) and resolution(s), symbols, how characterization supports the central message, any symbols that relate to the theme of each text, etc.

Remember, this is a persuasive research essay requiring you to put forth an opinion, then to support that opinion throughout the body of the essay. DO NOT simply give plot summaries of your sources. The main drive of this essay should be YOUR OWN, ORIGINAL IDEA supported by the text and sources. Your thesis will read something like “Anthropomorphism does X in children’s literature. It accomplished this by 1, 2, and 3.” Use the three texts to help you support 1, 2, and 3. (In fact, you won’t be able to develop a thesis until you have read and understood all three texts, their themes, their points of view, and their conflicts.)

Criteria: This assignment should be at least five pages (1500 words) long. You must include at least three primary texts. Both the primary sources and research MUST help you prove your thesis and must flow with the rest of the essay’s content. You need a minimum of three scholarly sources. You must also include properly-formatted in-text citations and at least one quote per source. An MLA-bibliography needs to be at the end of your essay (but does not count towards the minimum page count).
