Analytical Research Assignment (Part II) Oral Presentation — The Yellow Wallpaper
This assignment requires you to reframe the work you did in your primary source annotated bibliography for a short oral presentation of six to eight (6-8) minutes in length. For this presentation, you will find two secondary sources to include in the discussion of the topic you researched in the periodical databases. You will also create an engaging visual supplement that helps guide your audience and enhances the spoken content of your presentation.
The presentation should consist of five basic sections:
1) RESEARCH NARRATIVE: How did you come by this topic? What inspired you to begin researching this particular topic in the database?
2) METHODOLOGY/ARGUMENT: What research questions helped inform your work in the databases? Did you use a particular methodology to narrow down sources? If you were to expand this project into an essay, what might your working thesis statement be?
3) PRIMARY TEXTS: Select two primary texts from your annotated bibliography that best exemplify your findings on your topic. What were the predominant themes, patterns, and trends that emerged around your topic as your research progressed? What sorts of interpretations and conclusions can you draw based on the results of your search?
4) SECONDARY SOURCES: Find two scholarly, peer-reviewed secondary texts relevant to your research. What do other scholars have to say about your topic? How do your ideas and the results of your research fit in with existing scholarship? Does the work you’ve done on this project agree, disagree, or complicate what other sources have claimed about your topic? (N.B. MLA citations for these secondary texts should appear in a “Works Cited” slide at the end of the presentation.)
5) CONCLUSION: What did you take from doing this assignment? Is there anything you would have done differently? Hypothetically, if you were to return to this project in the future, what new angles or avenues might you consider — new research questions you might ask?
In general, each visual should include at least five slides using either PowerPoint, Keynote, Prezi, or a similar presentation software. Forthcoming class meetings will be devoted to discussing the qualities of successful visuals and strategies for giving presentations in greater detail.
