We all frequently have to check a box identifying our racial identity or our gender identity. However, for many people, that choice is not easy because they have more than one racial or ethnic group or their biological sex does not match the choices given to choose from. Moreover, many people’s appearance doesn’t exactly line up with the social group they are often “assumed” to belong to. Using the first two chapters from your Difference Matters textbook and the two articles listed on our reading schedule analyze how Americans categorize others by appearances and or assumptions. Why are labeling, grouping, and judging others so fundamental in our society? Can or should anything be done to change this behavior? Why or why not?
