Analyse the conversation on page 96 of Using English: from conversation to canon, to show which features indicate that this is an example of informal, everyday English, and which features indicate that it takes place in a work context. Relate your analysis to the wider discussion in Block 3 of the distinctive uses of English in workplace situations.

In view of the fact that conversation is, by its nature, highly spontaneous and unplanned, it is astonishing how people succeed in conversing with each other with relatively few mishaps.  By highlighting the features of the conversation in question (reproduced in Appendix A) that suggest we are dealing with everyday, commonplace talk, I shall show how people make use of a complex pattern of verbal  signs (even if unconsciously) to guide them smoothly through a conversation.  I shall show how language has two functions: what Michael Halliday (1978)  calls the ideational function to convey information and ideas, and perhaps the more subtle interpersonal function of negotiating relationships, amicability, status and so on….(short extract)
