A beneficent view of the sea has endured, and been passed down from generation to generation, since the days of the Enlightenment. Scientific progress during this period had far reaching social and cultural implications, which in turn gave rise to increased levels of faith in scientific method. Indeed, doctors orders would have been the initial reason for persons to find themselves by the sea during the early eighteenth century; if not prescribed to the bathing in or drinking of seawater, then at least to take in the unpolluted air – which was far more pleasant than bathing with the dippers (Brunton, 2008, p.170).
