Women and the Poor in the History of Political Philosophy: you will find that mention of women or the poor and their role in political life are often absent from courses in the history of political philosophy. However, it stands to reason that women have always played an important role in shaping the political life of a society in obvious and/or subtle ways. The same is true for the poor. Their role may have been limited but their presence in large numbers and their discontent will eventually play an important role.
Directions: Using three of the assigned readings for this week, write a short, creative essay (3 pages minimum) on how a woman’s perspective or the perspective of the poor might have changed or affected the ideas being discussed in the readings. Use the textbook (Ryan, Alan. On Politics: A History of Political Thought From Herodotus to the Present. Vols 1 & 2. New York, NY: Liverlight Publishing Corporation, 2012). The chapters to choose from are listed below.
Your essay should include:
A brief summary of each reading you selected. For each reading, analyze how including the perspective of women or the poor might have changed the ideas. Remember this is a creative exercise. Explain who you believe is being excluded from the political narrative today and why. Be detailed. ***This essay will need to be descriptive, reflective and/or comparative in your writing. Use APA format, it is ok to use direct quotes but limit quotes to a minimum of 3.
