You are required to write a five to seven (5-7)-page research paper for this course. It may be on a topic of your choosing however, the topic must be instructor approved. The topic must be from Western Civ. It does not need to be something we cover in class, but it must be from Western Civ. The paper can be about a person, place, event, time period, invention, etc. If you have not written an argumentative research paper before PLEASE SEE/CONTACT ME. I am more than willing to help.
The Research Paper is broken down into five assignments that concluded with your finished paper. The topic, preliminary sources and final paper are the only mandatory and graded assignments. The other assignments are optional, but strongly recommended. By completing them you will receive extra credit towards your final paper grade.
Topic ? Your topic MUST BE APPROVED by the professor before you begin work.
Example Topics:
1.) The Peloponnesian War is often described as being fought between an ?elephant and a whale;? wherein a strong land power (Sparta) fought a strong sea power (Athens.) How accurate is this description? Describe other examples of this scenario.
2.) Despite the fact that modern democracies look back on Classical Greece (especially Athens) for cultural and political inspiration, Classical Greece itself was primarily made up of rival polis (city-states) that were more often at war than in political agreement. What is it about Classical Greece that inspires such imitation; and why could the Greeks rarely get along?
3.) A common belief is that Roman expansion really occurred only in imperial times, rather than while a republic. Is this true?
4.) Compare the lack of centralized power in the west during the early Middle Ages (aside from the Church) with that of Byzantium.
5.) What are some of the effects of the Crusades on the West?
6.) How did the Hundred Years War help lead to the end of the Middle Ages?
7.) Why were the Portuguese and Spanish the leaders in sending out voyages of discovery?
8.) Despite all their horror, the wars of religion that followed the Protestant Reformation and Catholic Counter-Reformation are sometimes described as the fires from which modern Europe was forged. Is this true; or were there other factors at play?

Preliminary Sources ? You must turn in a tentative bibliography for your paper. Sources need to be approved by the professor.
Once you have your approved topic you need to begin researching it by locating sources. Sources can be books, journal articles, interviews, documentaries, online databases, scholarly websites, etc. You need a minimum of five sources.At least three of the sources must be books or scholarly journal articles! When choosing written sources it is important to research them as well. Be sure to search for academic reviews of the sources to see what historians have to say about them. This will improve the quality of your paper. If you have questions about a source and are having trouble locating answers, see the instructor for help. When it comes to scholarly journal articles, in most cases you will need to use an academic database located online. This is different than using an internet website because you are actually viewing the physical document, but in an online format. When it comes to citing a source in this manner you would actually cite the physical journal and not the internet address. If you have additional questions see instructor for help.
You may wish to consult the librarians in the use of the library?s materials and services for this project. It is highly recommended you acquaint yourself with the services they offer. Some sources are unacceptable. You may not use General sources, such as Encyclopedias, Dictionaries or the Course Textbook. Wikipedia, Ask.com, About.com, Sparks.com and the like are NOT ACCEPTABLE SOURCES. Use of them in your paper is unacceptable and papers containing information from them will not be accepted.
For the preliminary sources assignment your job is to list your sources in Chicago Manual of Style format as they would be found in the bibliography of your final paper. Be sure to follow all Chicago guidelines when completing the assignments as you will be graded on use of the format. For questions about Chicago see the instructor or visit the Learning Center. Outline/Final Sources ? EXTRA CREDIT ? for this extra assignment you need to turn in an outline of what you plan to write for your paper as well as a finalized bibliography page with all the sources you plan to use. Students can receive up to 50 extra points for completing this assignment as well as additional guidance in planning and writing your paper.
Rough Draft ? EXTRA CREDIT BUT STRONGLY RECOMMENDED ? You have the ability to turn in a rough draft of your final paper for the instructor to review and make suggestions/revisions. Students who turn in rough drafts consistently receive higher grades on their final paper (usually one entire letter grade higher). It is in your best interest to complete a rough draft for review. Students can receive up to 100 extra points for completing this assignment.

Plagiarism
Plagiarism is a serious academic offense. Any examples of plagiarism in any of your research paper assignments will result in an automatic failure of the entire course. Do your own work! When quoting from a source be sure to cite it! Failure to cite can be construed as plagiarism. Whenever you take an idea or information from a source you must cite it. That does not mean you can copy and paste large sections of text into your paper and add a citation at the end. This will be taken as attempting to ?pad? the assignment. Long quotations are to be used sparingly and must be justified in being long by what they add to the paper. There is a proper method for using long citations and you need to follow that procedure.
Standard procedure for long quotes: Center Justify, reduce font size from 12 to 10 and change spacing to single space
Cite, cite, cite your sources! You can never be wrong in citing information from another author. It will also prevent you from being accused of plagiarism. Failure to cite could be construed as an attempt at deception and will be acted on accordingly. DO YOUR OWN WORK!
Style
Final Papers should be double-spaced and stapled, use size 12 point Times New Roman font and have no greater than 1? margins. Failure to follow these guidelines will affect your final paper grade.
Each paper must have a thesis statement that clearly states the argument you are putting forward in your paper. You will use historical research and evidence to support your thesis statement in the paper.
Each paper needs a bibliography page. You must use Chicago Manual of Style format for citations and the bibliography page. If you have questions about Chicago Style format see the instructor.
Rules to follow!!!
1. Nothing is more important than formulating a thesis sentence, the point that you are trying to prove in the paper. You should then organize your thoughts into a coherent outline that will support your argument. A good way to see if your paper is well organized is to read just the topic sentences from each paragraph. If they do not flow well, then your paper will confuse the reader.
2. Good papers do not just happen to be sitting on printers in the computer labs. Good writing takes work, organization, and careful thought.
3. Always write in complete sentences!
4. A good paragraph has a clear topic sentence and 3-5 supporting sentences.
5. Always avoid sweeping generalizations, such as never and always.
6. Use quotations sparingly, and avoid paragraphs that are mostly another?s words. Be sure to integrate the quotation into the sentence with your own words.
7. Avoid contractions, colloquial language, clich?s, and slang terms. You will be writing a paper, not a note to a friend.
8. Be careful with singular/plural agreement. The most common errors are to treat countries as plural entities and to use they/their in the singular; not plural: (?Germany declared war on their enemy.?). Many of us use ?they/their? in the singular as a shortcut to avoid the sexist connotations of ?he/his,? but in formal writing you should avoid both sexism and grammatical errors!
9. Do not confuse ?its? with ?it?s.? ?It?s? is only the contraction of ?it is.?
10. Avoid first person pronouns, such as ?I,? ?we,? and ?us.? Do not write, ?I will show?? Just show it! Do not refer to Americans as ?us? or write ?we did?? unless you personally took part in those actions.
11. Provide citations every time you use information or ideas from another author. There is never any sin in giving credit to another author, but to use another author?s ideas without proper attribution is plagiarism. When reading for a paper, you should consider the quality and reliability of the source. Note that the internet is an especially uneven source. Many times one can find excellent sources on the internet that are nowhere else; at the same time, any fool can publish any garbage on the internet with no requirement of accuracy. Books and journals in the library have been vetted by professors, publishers, and librarians.
12. Proofread carefully because spellcheckers miss things and all writers have typos
13. Write about past events in the past tense, not the present. Use the active voice.
