historical contexts that Woolf was operating under and explore how the text responds, engages, or questions that context. Don’t panic! This is a very short paper, and
I would rather see you taking risks to attempt rhetorical analyst then write a five paragraph essay.
Your paper should make an argument, but remember that it is short, so your argument will have to be narrow! A good thesis should have a who, what, why, and how.
The who and the what are easy–Woolf is the who, your historical context is the what. It’s the why and how that are difficult, because that’s where the whole analysis
thing starts. Why is Woolf writing about this historical moment and how does she go about it? What do we learn about her message, and about the broader world around
her in the process?

WWI & The Interwar Period–Place the novel in a timeline of WWI and the proceeding events and examine how Woolf engages issues facing Britain and the world. Is she
direct? Implicit? What rhetorical strategies does she use to show the effects of war? Why?
