Urban Sprawl… Next Exit

Urban sprawl affects numerous people, from the farmer who sells his generations-old farm, to the retailer with a new store opening, to the family impacted by longer commute times. However, urban sprawl may not actually be perceived as a problem to everyone – a developer could simply call it growth. Likewise, the different disciplines will have their own perspective on the problem. In this Application, you will analyze how multiple disciplines merge in the issue of urban sprawl.

Note: Depending on the perspective you adopt in this activity, you may refer to urban sprawl as suburban growth.

To prepare for this Application:
•    Review Chapter 10 in the Course Text Deciphering the City and the article “Urban Sprawl.”
•    Review “Sprawl: Challenges and Solutions” and “Reality Check Maryland.”
•    Review the Disciplines Chart handout.
•    Identify an issue related to urban sprawl (or suburban growth) and choose a relevant discipline to adopt as your disciplinary perspective.
o    Some options include (from which you may choose but are not limited to) the plans for a road to be widened that will displace residents, a national chain store moving into a small town, or a local business affected by a coming national chain store.
Identify an alternate viewpoint about the urban sprawl (or suburban growth) issue you have chosen. This is the viewpoint of your audience, to whom you will be presenting. Understanding your audience’s viewpoint will help you focus your presentation.
