Task: You will write a 1000 to 1500-word research paper arguing for a position or course of action on a problem related to your major or an area of interest negotiated with me. As a common standard for your position, you will refer to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This paper will utilize the MLA style for in-text citation and Works Cited. Note that I do want the URLs for web sources in your Works Cited. You will utilize at least 7 sources, including at least 1 source from each of the categories below:
1. books
2. scholarly journals (either paper or electronic)
3. Reliable Web sources. Wikipedia will not fulfill this requirement. You may use Wikipedia as an extra source for background but not to document your evidence.
Furthermore, Your paper should be inspired by (but not necessary chained to) the elements of classical oratory: exordium, narratio, propositio, partitio, confirmatio, confutatio, digressio, and peroratio.

Procedure:
1. Select as a topic some controversial subject-matter question in your major or area of interest. Tell how your subject-matter question would impact one or more articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Due Wednesday, April 9, 2014.
2. Create a preliminary bibliography of at least 5 sources and attach to Sakai Assignments. State your topic at the top of the page. Due Monday, April 14, 2014.
3. Write a typed, one-page Planning Schema and Audience Analysis, including Claim with Reason, Assumptions, Evidence for Reason, Evidence for Assumption, Skeptics’ Objections, and Audience Analysis. Due Friday, April 18, 2014.
4. Required to pass course: Create an Outline/Plan/Agenda due Monday, April 21, 2014 for conferencing with instructor and include
a. an expanded bibliography (7 or more), representing each of the 3 categories and with annotations, explaining the content and how each will be used in your paper,
b. Photocopies or web-page print-outs of at least one relevant page from each of your sources,
c. An outline/plan/agenda/tree diagram/flowchart for your paper, using complete sentences. This outline will include the classical elements of argument:
• Introduction, Background, (exordium, narratio, propositio, partitio)
• Argument for your position, (confirmatio)
• Summary of opposing views, refutation, and concessions, (confutatio)
• and Conclusion (digressio, and peroratio).
5. Prepare a rough draft for Peer Review and submit as a new thread in Sakai Forum. Attach check list. Due Monday, April 28, 2014.
6. Perform a Peer Review for your partner as a reply in Sakai Forum. Due Wednesday, April 30, 2014.
7. Submit your Final Draft on Monday, May 5, 2014. Must include check list!
