U.S. Security Policy and Nuclear Proliferation

Question:
The film Countdown to Zero makes a compelling case that nuclear weapons have outlived their usefulness in the 21st century, with some scholars and activists in the film advocating that the U.S. adopt a unilateral policy of complete nuclear disarmament.
Given the recent expansion of tension in the Ukraine which could possibly bring the U.S. and Russia into a nuclear standoff, and the question of future Iranian possession of this weapon, how appropriate (or likely) would it be for America to advance such a policy?
