Research Paper: Influential Designs
As we continue our study of world architecture, we often identify important designs and then document their effects on later architectural history. Choose a single work of world architecture (a building, site, landscape, etc.) that you believe has been influential—or should have been more influential—on subsequent architectural design. The design must date between 1400 and 1965; also, you may not write on the topics of your presentation or first paper. Write a research paper arguing for the significance and influence of the design.

Describe the building design completely (at least one full page, possibly two), and then locate it in the overall sweep of architectural history. Remember that you are not just writing about the work, but attempting to convince your reader to understand the design in a particular way. Why or how has it been influential? State your assertion as a thesis, and place it at the end of your first paragraph. Then write your paper as an argument to support the contention of your thesis.

In addition to World Architecture: A Cross-Cultural History, you must cite four printed works of scholarly analysis: books, journal articles, or academic reference works. These could include several of the reserve resources for this course. Please attach photocopies of the title pages of any printed works (apart from the reserve books) to your paper. The Northeastern University Library also has a wealth of resources available online (including links to printed resources). At its website, click Find, Subject Guides, and then Architecture, or go to http://subjectguides.lib.neu.edu/architecture. You may also cite online sources in your paper, but ONLY in addition to your four printed sources. Printed journal articles accessed online would count as printed resources.

Papers must be original work, properly documented. You will be graded on the thoughtfulness of your arguments, but also on the grammar, proper formatting of citations, and the way you compose your arguments. Please properly cite all quotes, and follow the rules of expected academic conduct outlined in the syllabus. You may use Wikipedia for context, but do not quote or cite it. Besides the text include a Works Cited list and at least one image to illustrate the building/landscape. Do not list any URLs in your Works Cited.

Use MLA (Author 11) or Chicago style  for your citations; avoid APA (Author 2014), which is not suited for this type of paper. Look at the Purdue OWL handouts I posted on Blackboard for variations. Images and sources must be properly labeled and cited.  Always type your work on the computer and keep a digital file of the paper. The text of your paper should be 4-6 pages in length, double spaced, with 1-inch margins. Times New Roman font and 12-pt. type are the standard expectations. Your papers are due at the beginning of class on Thursday, June 18, and count as 30% of the class grade.
