Topic: “Oedipus Tyrannus” – Reflective Entry
Order Description
I need to write a Reflective Entry on this book called “Oedipus Tyrannus” by Sophocoles, ISBN: 9780872204928.
This is the question:
It is said that violence begets violence. Oedipus real father, Laius, attempted to kill Oedipus when he was a baby in order to refute the prophecy which said that he would be killed by his own
son. Ultimately, the prophecy is fulfilled, and Oedipus discovers that he has, in fact, killed his dad and married his own mother.
Using lines and passages to support your arguments, trace the violence found in the play that perpetuates (repeats) violence. Underline all book and film titles, put poem titles in quotation
marks. Please include 1 sentence of your own discussion question at the end of your entry.
1. How does the past catch up to the characters in the play?
2. In what instances is Oedipus acting like a tyrant, or with too much self-importance (hubris)?
3.Can you think of an ultimate ending to this play that would allow for “anagnorisus” , (recognition, or a change from ignorance to knowledge), without “peripeteia” (tragic reversal of fortune)?
