‘An intervention program to change/modify an aspect of your own behavior (self-modification).’
as my topic for the research paper.

It is required to write a structured research proposal on the chosen topic, using the principles and theories of behavior modification and behavioral research designs

and methods. The purpose of this assignment is twofold:

a) To design a behavior modification program to modify a target behavior using the principles of operant conditioning (NOT classical conditioning). You can design a

behavior modification program to increase a desired behavior, or reduce a problem behavior.

b) To propose an appropriate research or experimental design that would test/monitor the efficacy of your intervention (behavior modification) program.

It is expected to produce a report that demonstrates understanding of operant conditioning and also the relevant methods used to assess the efficacy of an intervention

(ie. methods that apply the principles of operant conditioning). It is expected to source your own references relevant to your topic, although your tutor may provide

assistance during tutorials, by providing some general suggestions for sourcing relevant journal articles.
When determining the appropriate design and measures to include in your paper, you are
expected to refer to the following articles:

This assignment should be no more than 1500 words in length. This word count is calculated from the first word of the introduction to the last word of the conclusion.

Thus, it excludes the abstract and the reference list, but INCLUDES in-text citations. The applied paper should be formatted according to APA (6th edition) guidelines,

and structured according to the following guidelines.

1. The Abstract should present a brief summary of the study (150 words maximum).

2. The Introduction Section should be based on the structure of a psychology laboratory
report introduction section. It should—

• Introduce and define behavior modification
• Provide a brief description of its theoretical background and review relevant literature/empirical evidence
• Introduce and define the behavior that your program will attempt to modify (i.e., problem gambling)
• Provide a structured and coherent rationale / argument for the proposed modification program / technique
• Outline the proposed behavior modification program, incorporating;
o an appropriate operational definition of the target behaviour
o reinforcement program applied
o measurement of the target behavior at baseline (pre-test) and post-test
• Outline main aims and hypotheses of your program and what you hope the intervention will achieve.

3. The Method Section provides an opportunity for you to propose and plan a research
design that will test the efficacy of your behavior modification program. The
Method section should include details as described below.

a. Participants
• Target population – age, gender, type of participant (dog, school student, sports person)

b. Materials
• Measures or equipment
• Description of independent and dependent variables, incorporating confounding variables

c. Research design
• Provide an operational definition of your target behavior
• Description of proposed design (e.g., experimental, survey, interview etc.)

d. Procedure
• Description of the study procedure, including information relating to obtaining permission to work with the participant, how you intend to gain the trust of the

participant, how you propose to establish and maintain confidentiality, when and how you would gather the initial data about the participant’s target behavior, any

follow up and/or feedback measures.

4. Intervention Program:
• Provide a full description of the program you have designed, explaining how,
why, when, where you propose to change the target behavior.

5. References:
• All in-text citations in this proposal must conform to the 6th edition format
prescribed by the American Psychological Association (APA). For further
information on citations and references in psychological writing, students
should refer to one of the writing for psychology texts (e.g., Burton, 2010) or
to the 6th edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological
Association (available in the library).
• Comprehensive and relevant published sources using APA format for the
reference list.

6. Structure and Expression:
• Ensure that you write your proposal using appropriate sentence and paragraph
structure, incorporating correct spelling and written expression/grammar.
