character in the story, what role to play, are they symbolic in any way, while also paying attention to the development of the psychology of the character within the

narrative. Your thesis should a strong assertion on your part as to what the character is about and of his or her role in the story, and your essay should seek to

support that assertion with carefully selected, quoted, and analyzed evidence from the text. In attempting to figure out who the character is, remember to ask yourself

why they need to be who they are for the story to work. Remember that paper should not just be a description of the character but an evaluation of the character as a

means within the narrative to develop the major themes of the story.
